Elizabeth

“Bragg and Allen were attacked from behind. They were surprised and then pricked with a sedative or something that rendered them unconscious,” Nicholas explained. “The men were waiting in the back room like the shop owner had told us. They didn’t have a chance. It was all carefully planned out, and they were lying in wait for you.”

I sighed, looking down at my hands. “Are they going to be okay?”

“Yes. The two of them will make a full recovery.”

“You will not reassign them like you did the two I tricked?” I asked, looking up just in time to see the corner of his mouth go up in a half-smile, and he shook his head.

“Don’t worry, they will not be reassigned. It is not their fault what happened.”

I smiled. The first smile since everything happened, and his face lit up. I ducked my head.

“That is great to hear. I wouldn’t want them to be in trouble. They were attacked the same as I was.”

“They were,” he said. He cleared his throat. “I should let you rest.”

“Thank you again, Nicholas. I really do not know what I would have done if you hadn’t shown up.”

“It was truly my pleasure, Princess Elizabeth. I am happy I was there to help, because you were pretty impressive dispatching the second man.”

I smiled again, rolling my eyes this time. “My need to do something other than sit around paid off with my training.”

He laughed. “It looks like it did. Get some rest.”

Nicholas bowed and turned to leave my room. He closed the door behind him as he walked out. I climbed out of bed and walked to the chair that was by the window. I sat, pulling my knees up to my chest and wrapping my arms around them. Leaning my head on the cool glass, I gazed out at the field that stretched out as far as I could see.
